Wilderness First Responder (WFR) is a 60-80 hour course
for wilderness professionals and others who want a higher level of training, or
require WFR certification. The course length may vary depending on whether the
class has previous training, or does enough reading and preparation to reduce
the need for lecture. Skills training is intensive, with many role-playing
wilderness accident scenarios. Some topics included in the basic
course are:

A basic introduction into human systems and patient
assessment |

Wilderness trauma: bleeding, abdominal
injuries, shock, pelvic injuries, fractures, sprains & strains, head injuries,
spinal injuries, burns, chest injuries, wounds & dressings |

Common wilderness medical emergencies:
seizures, sudden medical illnesses, diabetic emergencies, stroke, snake bites,
eye injuries, insect bites & stings, environmental emergencies, |

Additional topics include: Dressing for
survival, high altitude concerns, water disinfection, wilderness nutrition and
food protection, edible plants, lightning strikes, insects & predators, assembly
of wilderness first aid kits, rescue gear, and preparing victims for extraction.
Intended Audience:
This course is an ideal introduction for wilderness trip
leaders and guides, scout leaders, parks and recreations employees, Rangers,
BLM employees, campers,
fishermen, deep penetration hikers, off road enthusiasts, mountain bikers,
and many more. Our Wilderness Emergency Care classes All participants will
receive a textbook and a course completion card.
