A 40-hour course for those
who are already certified as EMT’s. Instructors may (at their
discretion) require a pre-test of basic EMT knowledge and skills. The course builds on EMT training and adds wilderness concepts and skills, with many role-playing scenarios. Students are expected to minimize the need for lecture by studying and preparing thoroughly for each class.
W-EMT-Upgrade may also be taught as an add-on module to a regular EMT course. Some topics included in the basic
course are:

A basic introduction into human systems and patient
assessment in relations to wilderness |

Wilderness trauma: bleeding, abdominal
injuries, shock, pelvic injuries, fractures, sprains & strains, head injuries,
spinal injuries, burns, chest injuries, wounds & dressings |

Common wilderness medical emergencies:
seizures, sudden medical illnesses, diabetic emergencies, stroke, snake bites,
eye injuries, insect bites & stings, environmental emergencies, |

Additional topics include: Dressing for
survival, high altitude concerns, water disinfection, wilderness nutrition and
food protection, edible plants, lightning strikes, insects & predators, assembly
of wilderness first aid kits, rescue gear, and preparing victims for extraction.
Intended Audience:
This course is an ideal introduction for CURRENTLY CERTIFIED Emergency
Medical Technicians (E.M.T.'s) who are outdoor enthusiasts, wilderness trip
leaders and guides, scout leaders, parks and recreations employees, campers,
fishermen, deep penetration hikers, off road enthusiasts, mountain bikers,
and many more. All participants will
receive a textbook and a course completion card.
