  Wilderness Emergency Care - Basic
   Basic Wilderness First Aid

Our classes are taught outdoors, where students have the opportunity to participate in realistic medical and rescue scenarios simulating those encountered in remote areas. An intensive 8-10 hour course for those who participate in wilderness recreation, WFA-Basic (WEC-A) may also meet the needs of volunteers and professionals who lead groups on short trips in relatively low-risk situations, where they are not far from help, but prepare students for the type of situations where dialing 911 or driving to the hospital may not be an immediate option.
This 8-10 hour class is taught during a one-day session and some topics included in the basic course are:
A basic introduction into human systems and patient assessment,
Wilderness trauma: bleeding, abdominal injuries, shock, pelvic injuries, fractures, sprains & strains, head injuries, spinal injuries, burns, chest injuries, wounds & dressings
Common wilderness medical emergencies: seizures, sudden medical illnesses, diabetic emergencies, stroke, snake bites, eye injuries, insect bites & stings, environmental emergencies,

Additional topics include: Dressing for survival, high altitude concerns, water disinfection, wilderness nutrition and food protection, edible plants, lightning strikes, insects & predators, assembly of wilderness first aid kits, rescue gear, and preparing victims for extraction.
