| The
Wilderness Emergency Care (W.E.C.) program supports a family of
courses to meet the needs of everyone with outdoor interests,
from easy day trips to challenging and technical activities,
including wilderness rescue. All of the courses provide hands-on
practical training, to prepare you for wilderness emergencies.
Like other courses at Insight Educators, these are designed to
give you a lively and enjoyable learning experience. Our
programs are developed around the "hands-on" model and are
taught outdoors, where students have the opportunity to
participate in realistic medical and rescue scenarios simulating
those encountered in both remote and not-so-remote areas.
The textbook not only explains the concepts in clear language; it also
shows you how to do all the skills, step by step, with many photos and
drawings.

Wilderness First Aid
- Basic (WEC-A)
An intensive 8-10 hour
course for those who participate in wilderness recreation. It may also
meet the needs of volunteers and professionals who lead groups on short
trips in relatively low-risk situations, where they are not far from
help. Some topics included in the basic course are a basic
introduction into human systems and patient assessment, common medical
emergencies in the wilderness, environmental emergencies, wilderness
trauma, basic survival, extraction, rescue gear and first aid kits.
This course is an ideal introduction for scout leaders, parks and
recreations employees, campers, fishermen, day hikers, off road
enthusiasts, mountain bikers, and many more. |

Wilderness First Aid - Advanced (WEC-B)
A 16-20 hour course for
those who do more serious wilderness activities. It is the choice of
many wilderness trip leaders and guides. WFA-A presents wilderness
topics in more detail, including advanced wound care, high risk
penetrating and/or blunt trauma injuries, provides more time for skills
practice, and also includes role-playing wilderness accident scenarios.
This is a good choice for assistant trip leaders or guides who will be
assisting Wilderness First Responder or W-EMT-trained staff or for those
who will be doing 2-4 day trips where they may have to care for a
patient for hours.

Wilderness Response Technician (WEC-C /
WRT)
NEW!! |
Not your standard Basic Wilderness First Aid course;
A 24-28 hour course, taught over 3 days (usually including an
overnight) is a course for those who do more serious wilderness
activities and those who want a challenging training experience
to better face adverse conditions in wilderness medicine. WEC-WRT,
although still a non-professional rescuer certification,
presents wilderness topics in greater detail, including advanced
wound care, high risk trauma,
provides more time for skills practice and scenario training |

 |
Wilderness First
Responder (WEC-D / WFR)
A 60-80 hour course for
Wilderness Professionals and others who want a higher level of training,
or require WFR certification. The course length may vary depending on
whether the class has previous training, or does enough reading and
preparation to reduce the need for lecture. Skills training is
intensive, with many role-playing wilderness accident scenarios.
|
|
 |
Wilderness EMT
Upgrade (WEC-E / W-EMT-U)
A 40-hour course for those
who are already certified as EMT’s. Instructors may (at their
discretion) require a pre-test of basic EMT knowledge and skills. The
course builds on EMT training and adds wilderness concepts and skills,
with many role-playing scenarios.
Students are expected to minimize the need
for lecture by studying and preparing thoroughly for each class.
W-EMT-Upgrade may also be taught as an add-on module to a regular EMT
course.
