The window of survival for sudden cardiac arrest victims is usually less than seven minutes, making it critical to administer defibrillation quickly. According to the American Heart Association, for every minute that passes after cardiac arrest, a victim's chance of survival decreases by 10 percent, and the potential for brain damage can occur as early as five minutes after onset. The national survival rate for sudden cardiac arrest is currently only 5 percent. With widespread AED deployment, these survival rates can increase dramatically. Shortening the time to defibrillation improves survival from cardiac arrest.
